04 Mar Canonbury Volunteers at Margins Project
Last week twelve Canonbury children volunteered to prepare the beds for the homeless guests at the Margins Project, Union Chapel. Every year we raise money to support Margins-this year we almost reached £1000. We were invited to come and see Margins for ourselves.
For one night a week in the winter months, Margins provides shelter for 15 homeless guests. Our children had many questions for the Margins Team:
How do the guests know this is here?
All the guests are referred by organisations who help the homeless – they tell them where we are and book them in.
Do you give the guests clean clothes?
If we have suitable clothes, we offer them – but they have a choice whether or not they take them. This is a place where guests can have their dignity and make their own choices.
What if they are far away from here – how can they walk all this way?
One thing we can do is give them an Oyster card so that they can come on the bus.
Does some of the money go to the guests?
No, because we don’t know what they will spend it on. Your money goes to funding the food and beds and also things like the Oyster card.
How old are your guests?
The oldest is 66 and we don’t accommodate people under 18.
