14 Mar Goldsworthy Firefighter Training
On Monday, March 13th Goldsworthy Class took a trip to Islington Fire Station on Upper Street. We walked to the fire station in pairs and when we arrived the firefighters opened the huge fire station doors where we were greeted by White Watch who had huge, welcoming smiles. We were split into two groups and began exploring the fire station and learning about what life is like for a firefighter. One group looked at the Rescue Equipment including heat sensors used to find people in smoke, a special camera to look around corners and metal cutters for helping people in car accidents. The other group were taken into the fire engine where Abby the firefighter talked about the special breathing equipment that firefighters use and we took turns wearing the breathing masks. Abby also talked about the protective uniform that firefighters wear and the children reminded Abby what she needed to put on.
Next, it was time to use the fire hose. What an exciting opportunity! Everyone took a turn to use the fire hose with some children helpfully washing the crew’s parked cars.
We finished our visit with a talk about how important smoke alarms are and Abby came down the fire station pole to squeals of delight.
A fun and educational visit that the children will always remember.
