29 Apr Headteacher Update 29th April
A warm hello to everyone at Canonbury as we enter the fourth week of Canonbury Daily Learning
-and Ramadan Mubarak to all our families who are observing the holy month of Ramadan.
As the lockdown continues we are relying on the daily government briefings for news about schools – at present we do not receive any extra or different information. We know schools will remain closed for now and a date for reopening has not been set. We are all hoping that it will be safe for schools to reopen during the summer term. Let me say now to Year 6 – we will make sure that you have fantastic leaving events, and are ready to have them in the summer holidays if it comes to it! Although I am sure we will be back before then.
Thank you to all who sent in artworks following my assembly – they are in the school windows for passers-by to enjoy (see above) and also on the website:

You can call the main school number Monday-Friday at the following times:
9.00a.m.-12,00pm and 1.30- 3.30p.m.
By email:You can contact us as usual by emailing:
admin@canonbury.islington.sch.uk
This address is being monitored throughout the day and your query will be directed to the appropriate person. We aim to respond on the same day and within 48 hours.
Daily Home Learning
It has been good to see that so many of you are completing the Daily Home Learning – for the summer term we are continuing with the approach of setting daily tasks. I know lots of you are running out of exercise books – new ones are ready to collect safely from the school office during school hours.
We aim to keep moving forward with our provision throughout the closure. Our first objective has been to establish the home learning on the website and now we are working to introduce two-way communication with our children and families at home using the ClassDojo platform.
ClassDojo for Home-School Communication
All parents have been sent an email inviting you to sign up for ClassDojo, the platform we are using to send video messages, receive work from children and swap messages about the learning. I know most families have signed up quickly and are using it-thank you. If you have not received the email invite, please check your ‘junk mail’ in case it has gone there – if it is not there, do email us so we can check we have used the right address and can help you sign up. We are using ClassDojo to communicate with children and families on a daily basis- as we become more confident in making videos, we aim to make it a ‘Canonbury at home’ with more support for the Daily Learning, whole school messages and celebrations of children’s achievements – so keep watching!
School Website
In addition to the Home Learning Tab, please keep an eye on the ‘News’ and ‘Canonbury TV’ pages. As well as news about children’s achievements at home, we publicise online support such as Rachel, Neville and Jennifer’s music videos – and TeamKickStart PE challenges have started this week – see link at the end. This term we aim to do as much as possible using short video messages on ClassDojo – we will message you to let you know when longer videos are posted elsewhere and I will continue to include links at the end of my updates.
Phone Calls Home
Class teachers have been calling all families in their classes to say hello and check in with how you are doing. We understand that every household has their own challenges at this time and the phone calls help us to ensure that you have access to school support for learning and well-being during the closure.
Your phone will display ‘no caller ID’, so if you see this please pick up if you can. If your teacher has been unable to contact you they will message you on ClassDojo with a time window that they will call – in that way you can predict that the ‘no caller ID’ is from us. Jo Davey (Deputy Head) and Chloe Smith (Pastoral Manager) are calling families that teachers are unable to reach from the school phone this week. Our aim is to check in with everyone.
Free School Meal Vouchers
We have been issuing vouchers for families eligible for Free School Meals throughout the school closure – if you are having problems accessing your vouchers please contact us and the Admin. Team will help you. If you think you may be eligible for Free School Meals you can look at the criteria by following this link:
We look forward to being back at school as soon as we can – in the meantime, we will continue to look for ways to support children and families at home – and see you on ClassDojo!
