14 Jun The Orchestra! – Part 4
Hughes Class – Theme and Variations
Year 5 Hughes Class has completed our series of music lessons for Years 4 and 5 in preparation for their trip to hear the London Symphony Orchestra on 13th June.
In the concert they heard Ravel’s Bolero and Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. In his work, Britten took a theme by another English composer, Henry Purcell, re-orchestrated it and then wrote a series of variations on the theme for different sections of the orchestra.
Today, Hughes Class performed a complete version of the main theme then composed their own variations on that theme by taking fragments of melody and/or rhythm and developing them in their own way using a range of tuned and untuned instruments. They had to follow a common musical form of three sections (ABA) and include dynamics (changes in volume).
If your child wants to explore the orchestra further at home, we recommend that you go to the LSO Play website, which the children saw today. They can explore how the orchestra is constructed, listen to and watch different pieces of music and learn about the members of the London Symphony Orchestra. Go to http://play.lso.co.uk/
