At Canonbury Primary School, we find that children who consolidate their school learning at home, make better progress at school overall. It is with this rationale that we focus our home learning tasks. By setting home learning we aim to encourage a strong and positive partnership between home and school; to enable parents to support classroom work and to ensure that children make the best possible progress.
Timetable
To ensure consistency across the school, all teachers follow the timetable outlined below regarding homework:
- Homework is given out every Friday.
- Homework is returned to the class teacher every Wednesday.
- There is a weekly spelling and mental mathematics test every Thursday.
Content
- Mathematics homework will be set each week. This will be supported in during class teaching on a Monday morning during the ‘mental and oral,’ part of the lesson and will be tested every Thursday. Additional mathematics homework may be set.
- Spellings will be set each week. This will be tested every Thursday.
- Speaking and listening homework will be set. This will provide an opportunity to discuss at home topics that will be discussed further in the classroom.
- A piece of writing will be set each week. This will link to class work.
- Reading will be set and recorded each week.
- Additional homework may be set by the class teachers.
Parents/Carers
To ensure that parents/carers are informed on the progress and outcomes from homework, all feedback is contained in one book.
If homework is late or not handed in to the teacher, parents/carers will be informed informally in the first instance. If this is persistent, parents/carers will be sent a letter to keep them informed.
Mathematics
Mathletics
Canonbury is subscribed to the most used mathematics website with 3 million users and 7000 schools worldwide. This fantastic resource is offered at a greatly discounted price, which means we are able to offer the facility to all pupils from Reception to Year 6.
Pupils are captivated by the online mathematics mental maths game, where they are pitched against other pupils from around the world in real-time games using speed and skill. The more children use this, the faster and more accurate their mental maths skills will become.
It has over 850 activities for ages 5 to 18 years. Parents can sign up to receive a weekly report on their child’s progress and see the results first-hand. It provides a perfect link between home and school and includes activities for every area of mathematics. Children are motivated by receiving points and being awarded certificates.
Teacher’s in school can set levels for individual pupils so that they will always be challenged and therefore will access mathletics at the appropriate level. Pupils and parents enjoy the instant feedback after each activity, showing where strengths and weaknesses may be.
If your child needs their log-in details please ask the class teacher for a copy. Your child’s log-in can be found on the inside cover of their homework book. This log-in will also allow your child to access the spellodrome activities.
