The Governing Body has responsibility, alongside the staff, for setting the strategic direction of the school so that all children have the best possible education.

There are 16 Governors on Canonbury Governing Body in total who are drawn from the staff of the school, the Local Authority, parents and the wider community that our school serves.  The usual term of office is four years but many governors stand for re-election and serve more than one term.  The governing body meets as a whole group each term and delegates its business to a range of committees.

Our role is crucial:

  • We fulfil statutory duties to ensure that the school is a safe, healthy and an inclusive environment
  • We provide support and challenge to the leadership team of the school on all issues that affect the learning and welfare of our pupils
  • We provide a link into the wider Borough of Islington– helping to ensure we are able to contribute to decisions made about schools across the Borough

The Governing Body is drawn from the staff of the school, the Local Authority, parents and the wider community that our school serves.

Co-opted Governors provide special skills which we require to run the school effectively and usually come from the Islington area.

Parent Governors play a particular role in representing parental concerns to the governors and we are always looking for interested parents who want to contribute to the school in this way.

Staff Governors give insight from the classroom perspective.

We support the school in making decisions on:

  • Vision and Values
  • Curriculum
  • Standards
  • Finance
  • Premises
  • Health and safety
  • Welfare and discipline
  • Staffing
  • Equality and inclusion
  • Community
  • Admissions
  • Extended services
  • Special Educational Needs
