03 Jul From Hero to Harvest
Look at what we have been learning in reception
From Hero to Harvest!
It all started back in a cold, cold February when we first encountered ‘Supertato’ along with his arch nemesis the ‘Evil Pea’…
Using our class story ‘Supertato’(by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet) as a stimulus, the children made their own supertato models and wrote an accompanying sentence, which they thought their supertato might say.
Then, we decided to plant some ‘super’ potatoes and ‘evil’ peas of our own, in our own Reception outdoors area, to see which would grow most successfully…would it be the supertatoes or would it be the evil peas…only time would tell…
We chitted our seed potatoes and planted them. They were very well looked after and nurtured until this week when we decided to harvest them and cook them, along with some of the finest herbs in the country – also grown in our outdoor area.
The children washed and prepared the potatoes and practised their knife skills as they chopped up the herbs; and heavenly aromas filled the classroom as potatoes and herbs were combined to create a most delicious potato salad, enjoyed by everyone in a spud munching picnic this afternoon…
…and as for those ‘evil’ peas…sadly some vigilante squirrels took care of those!
Orson “I like the taste of them; they tasted yummy!”
“Finding the potatoes in the soil was exciting,” Siyanna and Willow
“I know how to cut with a knife now,” Aziza
“I liked when we were decorating our supertatoes” Mason
“I planted my supertato in my back garden and I think it flew away!” Olive
