09 Feb Warmups and Movement in Year 5 Brass Lesson
Music in Year 5
Brass players need to warm up carefully before they play, just like athletes, footballers and singers do. At Canonbury most of our Year 5 and 6 brass warmups are led by children, which makes it more fun and gives us a nice bit of leadership, responsibility and insight. In the first picture a Year 5 tenor horn group is just finishing a warmup, led by a group member.
The other thing we have been working on is using big body movements to help us learn music and to remember the much smaller movements we need to make when we play. This sort of mental mapping really helps us to grasp a new tune. In the second picture the Year 5 children are leaning over, singing an E … in a moment they will be standing up straight and singing a D. It’s not complicated but it is very useful fun!
